The Cardinals weren’t even sure they were going to take him on the trip. But when they did, they certainly weren’t thinking about letting him play.
Inside linebacker Desmond Bishop, in fact, was on the pregame list of those who weren’t going to be allowed to even dress for Saturday’s preseason game against the Vikings.
“We had no plans on playing him,” coach Bruce Arians said. “But he had a real good workout in the weight room and we took him out before the game and ran the crap out of him and said, ‘Des, do you want to play some?’ He said, ‘Heck, yeah.’
“He had already been through hell and back in two really hard workouts and we were going to get him five or six plays. I think he ended up playing 12 to 15.”
Arians liked what he saw out of the veteran, whom the Cardinals signed as a free agent just two days earlier.
Bishop, who won a Super Bowl with the Green Bay Packers, suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee last October and the Packers ultimately let him walk.
“Not as much rust as I thought,” Arians said. “I thought he flew around really well. He’s obviously a bright guy to pick up some of the defense that quick and not even having gone through a walk-through, just having some meeting time. I was very pleased with that.”
