It certainly was unusual to see inside linebacker Desmond Bishop working in the one-on-one pass rushing drill yesterday. That’s normally reserved for defensive ends and outside linebackers. Bishop and the rest of the inside linebackers are normally at the other end of the field doing 7-on-7 pass coverage drills during that period.
But every once in a while during a game, Bishop will line up and rush on the edge, so he wanted to get some work in.
He took only one rep and got blocked by left tackle Chad Clifton, but he felt it was valuable work.
“I just wanted to go down there and get some work because sometimes in the game I will go up against an offensive lineman,” Bishop said after practice. “I just wanted to learn their techniques and what techniques I can use to give myself the best chance to get to the quarterback. I figure if I can beat some O-linemen, I should be able to get past the running backs.”
Bishop does most of his blitzing from the inside on “twists” or “cross dogs” but said he thinks he can be effective coming off the edge.
“I’ve got a little more room to work (off the edge),” he said.
