VACAVILLE  — Green Bay Packers linebacker and Fairfield native Desmond Bishop tried his hand at a different sport Friday night: bowling.

Bishop, along with Green Bay Packers cornerback Jarrett Bush, safety Charlie Peprah and Cleveland Browns linebacker James-Michael Johnson, bowled at Stars Recreation Center for the inaugural Youth Foundation Bowling Night, a prelude to Bishop’s annual football camp.

While their bowling game was a close one — or as Bush said, laughing, “(Bishop’s) coming in last place!” — it was all for a good cause.

Bishop is holding his fifth annual Desmond Bishop Youth Football Camp Saturday at Fairfield High’s Schaefer Stadium. The free event is held every year for children and youths ages 8-18.

But Bishop said he wanted to give back even further and hold an event that everyone in the community could enjoy.

“Any opportunity I can give back . . . I’m trying to raise awareness about my different charities,” he said.

All proceeds go to the Desmond Bishop Fitness for Youth Foundation, a nonprofit benefiting Solano County youth and people of all ages with anxiety disorders.

Bishop said the cause was close to his heart because his mother, Sherry Harris, suffers from anxiety disorder.

“She’s my inspiration for it,” he said. “I’m her inspiration helping her through.”

Community members came throughout the night to play unlimited bowling, eat pizza, and, of course, meet Bishop and his fellow NFL players.

Sarah Portugal came with a very young Green Bay Packers fan, her son and baby Jackson Bergantz.

Portugal, a huge Green Bay Packers fan herself, was really excited to meet Bishop and about the event.

“He’s really nice,” Portugal said about Bishop. “I hope they do this again.”
