In Sunday’s exhibition at San Francisco, Vikings coaches gave veteran linebacker Desmond Bishop plenty of opportunities to impress them.
After his first significan playing time since 2011, Bishop proclaimed himself ready to take over the starting weakside linebacker spot.
“I definitely can handle it, but that’s not my call,” Bishop said. “I don’t make that decision.”
Bishop led the Vikings with nine tackles and added two tackles for losses.
After being slowed by a groin injury earlier in the preseason, he eased his way back onto the field, culminating with his extended appearance Sunday night at Candlestick Park.
But Bishop said he’s not even sure he’s got a roster spot locked up.
“I don’t assume anymore; I learned that nothing is guaranteed,” he said. “Definitely don’t have a sense of entitlement. But all of that stuff, I can’t control. All I can control is what I do on game day.”
Head coach Leslie Frazier acknowledged that Bishop played “much better” against the 49ers than he did against the Buffalo Bills.
“We are going to play him again on Thursday night, and we are hoping that he will get better again, just continue to improve,” Frazier said. “But he has showed some things.
“But we have to just continue to put him out there, put him in situations, and see how he does.”
Marvin Mitchell remains listed as the starter on the unofficial depth chart.
