Vikings linebacker Desmond Bishop made a cameo appearance at Winter Park on Wednesday as he works through the early stages of a lengthy rehabilitation from reconstructive knee surgery.
Time is his only opponent, something he measures day by day, which was evident when asked the date of his operation.
“Twenty-four days ago, whatever that was,” he said. “Every day is just rehab on my mind.”
Bishop was injured Oct. 13 against Carolina, his first start of the season after playing behind Marvin Mitchell the first four games. Renowned orthopedist James Andrews performed the surgery. Bishop is rehabbing at Andrews’ Pensacola, Fla., facility but decided to revisit teammates and the Vikings’ medical staff this week.
He insisted it was merely “coincidence” that he returned the week the Vikings are preparing to visit Lambeau Field, where Bishop played six seasons for the Packers before signing with Minnesota as a free agent.
Bishop posted career highs in tackles (142) and sacks (five) in 2011 after taking over as starter in Week 5 of Green Bay’s 2010 Super Bowl championship season. But he ruptured his right hamstring during the 2012 preseason opener at San Diego and missed all of last season. Green Bay released him in June.
Bishop, 29, will be a free agent again. His future in the NFL is uncertain. He has no timetable for his return.
“I do but it’s in the back of my mind,” Bishop said. “Really, I’m just taking it one day at a time. But, hopefully, when the time comes, after adding up all those days, I get to a certain day, it’ll be all right and I’m right where I want to be.”
